walking in west dorset
Monkton Wyld Farm is an ideal location for visitors who enjoy walking and exploring the countryside. West Dorset is very unspoilt, the hills and valleys have kept large scale farming at arms length leaving a very unique landscape. Small fields segmented by ancient woodland, deep coombes topped by Neolithic hill forts characterise the region. Nearly all of West Dorset is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This is now regarded as having similar status to national parks.
Specially produced cards providing detailed descriptions of local walks together with a section of a 1:25 000 Ordnance Survey map covering the area of the walk are available for loan or purchase from the campsite office.
Footpaths are generally well marked and there are a number of National Trust Estates in the area. A particularly beautiful spot is the Trust’s Golden Cap estate which overlooks Lyme Bay and contains some fine coastal heathland.
