At Monkton Wyld Holiday Park, we are immensely proud of our environmental achievements, having been awarded the prestigious David Bellamy Gold Awards over consecutive years since 2001.
This remarkable recognition celebrates our outstanding contribution to wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship within the park.
Our commitment to sustainable practices extends beyond our daily operations. One of the adjacent fields owned by Monkton Wyld Holiday Park is rented to a local farmer who cultivates the land with remarkable sensitivity to the surrounding ecosystem.
Recognising the re-emergence of native wildflowers following decades of intensive agricultural use, we have deliberately maintained this area as a traditional hay field. This approach has created a haven rich in indigenous herbs and wildflowers, simultaneously providing nutritious winter cattle feed whilst fostering biodiversity.
The Dorset countryside provides the perfect backdrop for our wildflower initiatives. Once common throughout Britain, traditional hay meadows have declined by 97% since the 1930s, making our conservation efforts particularly significant. Our carefully managed meadows showcase spectacular displays of native orchids, yellow rattle, oxeye daisies and knapweed—creating a tapestry of colour that changes throughout the seasons.
Delicate Lady’s-smock (also known as Cuckooflower) has re-emerged in our fields after years of intensive farming, testament to our commitment to traditional land management. These wildflower areas serve as crucial habitats for bees, butterflies and other pollinators whose populations have dramatically declined in recent decades.
Visitors come back year after year to see our wildflower and meadows, as well as ensuring all our butterflies, bees and insects are welcomed by letting them live in the many bug hotels located across the park.
Monkton Wyld Camping, Caravanning and Static Holiday Caravan Park applied to join the award scheme for the first time in 2001 and the inspectors had no difficulty in recommending Gold
